Sound healing uses acoustic instruments to produce sustained tones and vibrations that interact with the nervous system and brainwave activity. When the brain is exposed to consistent, rhythmic sound frequencies, it naturally synchronises with them — a process called entrainment. This shifts brainwave activity from the alert beta state of everyday thinking down into alpha and theta states associated with deep relaxation, creativity, and restorative rest.
The physical body responds accordingly. Muscles release held tension. Breathing slows and deepens. The heart rate settles. The nervous system moves out of a stress response and into genuine rest — often more completely than it can through effort or intention alone.
James trained in Advanced Sound Healing at Lotus Mindful, Nepal, and works with a broad range of instruments to produce layered, immersive sessions tailored to each client.
The range of instruments James works with sets these sessions apart from a single-bowl experience. Each instrument has a distinct tonal quality and effect:
Tibetan singing bowls — warm, complex overtones that resonate through the body as much as they are heard
Crystal singing bowls — clear, sustained tones with strong entrainment qualities
Tuning forks — precise frequencies applied directly to the body or around the energy field for targeted resonance
Tongue drum — melodic, meditative tones with a grounding, contemplative quality
Gong — powerful, immersive waves of sound that build and wash through the body, producing a strong entrainment effect
Medicine drum — grounding, rhythmic pulse that anchors the nervous system
Didgeridoo — deep, continuous vibration with a strong physical resonance
Vocal harmonies — layered voice work woven through sessions where appropriate
Chronic stress and an overactive nervous system
Anxiety, racing thoughts, and difficulty slowing down
Poor sleep quality and difficulty achieving deep rest
Recovery from periods of high emotional or physical demand
Grief, burnout, or a sense of depletion that rest alone hasn't resolved
Deepening meditative or contemplative practice
General restoration for clients who feel consistently depleted
A brief conversation first. James will ask about your current state, what you're hoping to experience, and whether there's anything relevant to be aware of before the session begins. Sound healing is safe for most people, but certain conditions — including some forms of epilepsy, pregnancy, and cochlear implants — require consideration. James will work through this with you.
The session. You'll lie comfortably on the treatment table, fully clothed, eyes closed. James moves through the instruments at his own pace, building layers of sound that shift and settle over the course of the session. Some clients experience vivid imagery or emotional release. Most simply experience a depth of rest they rarely access in daily life. There is nothing you need to do — the process is entirely receptive.
Afterwards. Most clients surface from a sound healing session feeling noticeably quieter, heavier, and more grounded than when they arrived. Taking time before driving or returning to demanding activity is recommended. Drinking water and allowing yourself a gentle transition back into the day makes a meaningful difference to how long the effects last.
Sound healing is available as a standalone session, or combined with massage in the Massage + Sound Healing Package — 2 hours 15 minutes at $390.
The combined session begins with a full remedial or relaxation massage, addressing physical tension and muscular holding before the body moves into the sound healing component. The result is a depth of release that neither modality fully achieves alone — the massage prepares the body physically, and the sound healing works at the level of the nervous system.
For clients dealing with both physical tension and chronic stress or poor sleep, the combined session is worth considering.
Sound healing suits anyone whose nervous system rarely gets a genuine opportunity to rest — people carrying chronic stress, disrupted sleep, or a background level of tension that physical treatment alone hasn't fully resolved. It's also a strong option for clients who meditate or have a contemplative practice and want to deepen that experience with skilled facilitation.
It is not a replacement for medical or psychological treatment where those are indicated. James works within his scope and will say so clearly if a different kind of support is more appropriate for your situation.
