Deep tissue massage is often misunderstood as simply pressing harder. It isn't. It uses specific techniques — slower strokes, sustained pressure, and deliberate angles — to work through the superficial layers of muscle and into the deeper tissue beneath.
The goal is to release adhesions, reduce chronic tension, and restore movement in areas that have been restricted for a long time. It's clinical and purposeful, not a test of how much pressure you can handle.
Deep tissue massage in Tweed Heads is well suited to:
Chronic lower back pain and muscle tightness
Neck and shoulder pain from desk work or postural strain
Sciatica and hip pain
Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches
Sports injuries and muscle fatigue
Poor posture and upper crossed syndrome
Workplace strain from repetitive movement or sustained positions
Restricted range of motion in the shoulder, neck, or hips
Chronic muscle tension that hasn't responded to stretching alone
Step 1 — Assessment Your session begins with a short consultation to understand what's been going on. James then assesses your posture and range of motion to identify where restriction is originating — not just where you feel pain. This shapes everything that follows.
Step 2 — Treatment Treatment begins with the most appropriate techniques for your body that day. Pressure is adjusted throughout — you're in control. James will use one or more modalities depending on what the assessment shows, including deep tissue work, trigger point release, myofascial release, dry needling, or cupping.
Step 3 — Aftercare You leave with specific aftercare advice and, where relevant, simple mobility exercises or postural guidance to support your recovery between sessions. The goal is lasting improvement — not a result that fades within 48 hours.
Deep tissue work suits people carrying long-term tension that hasn't shifted with lighter treatment — desk workers, tradies, gym-goers, and anyone dealing with recurring tightness in specific areas.
It's not appropriate during certain acute injuries, inflammatory conditions, or if you're on blood-thinning medication. If you're unsure, mention it when you book and James can advise before the session.

The broader clinical framework that deep tissue technique sits within. If you're unsure which to book, remedial massage is the right starting point.
Targeted release of hyperirritable spots within the muscle that cause localised and referred pain. Often used alongside deep tissue work.
Suction-based treatment that lifts and decompresses tissue rather than compressing it. Effective for broad areas of tension and a useful complement to deep tissue massage.
